Protein Chips vs Greek Yogurt: Cold vs Shelf-Stable
Yogurt wins on protein per calorie by a wide margin. Chips win everywhere a fridge isn't.

This is the comparison where we lose most clearly, so let's put the number up front.
Plain 0% Greek yogurt delivers roughly 17 grams of protein per 100 calories. Our chips deliver 8. That's more than double, and there's no framing that changes it.
Greek yogurt is one of the most protein-efficient foods available in a grocery store. If protein per calorie is your only criterion, this comparison is over in one line.

Why Greek yogurt is so protein-dense
Straining. Regular yogurt is strained to remove whey and lactose-containing liquid, which concentrates the protein that remains. Roughly three or four times the milk goes into a given volume of Greek yogurt compared with conventional yogurt.
The 0% versions are the most efficient, because removing fat removes calories without touching protein. Full-fat Greek yogurt is excellent food and scores considerably lower on protein per calorie — around 8, which is where we sit.
Where the comparison gets more even
Four places.
Refrigeration. The obvious one and the largest in practice. Yogurt needs a cold chain from factory to spoon. A desk drawer, a gym bag, a glovebox, a lunchbox in a warm classroom, a hiking pack — in all of those, yogurt is either unavailable or a food-safety risk. Our chips are stable for months at room temperature.
Fibre. Yogurt has none. Dairy has none. Three grams isn't spectacular but it's three more than zero, and fibre works on a longer satiety timescale than protein's hormonal signal. See the 3 g fibre detail.
Lactose. Straining removes a lot of it, but not all. Lactase non-persistence is the global default rather than the exception, with prevalence above 65% worldwide and considerably higher in some populations. For a meaningful share of people, Greek yogurt causes bloating, gas and cramping. Detail in digestive comfort.
Sweetened versions are a different product. Flavoured Greek yogurts frequently carry 10–18 g of added sugar, which changes the protein-per-calorie figure substantially. The plain version earns the reputation; the strawberry one borrows it.
Plant-based Greek-style yogurt, which complicates things
Worth its own note, because the variance is enormous and most people don't check.
| Base | Protein per 175 g |
|---|---|
| Dairy Greek, 0% | ~17 g |
| Soy | 8–11 g |
| Pea protein | 8–10 g |
| Almond | 3–5 g |
| Oat | 2–3 g |
| Coconut | 1–2 g |
Coconut-based is the most widely stocked and the least useful for protein. Two products in the same fridge section can differ by a factor of eight on the thing you're buying them for. Read the panel.
The genuine recommendation
If you have a fridge and no dairy intolerance, plain Greek yogurt is a better protein snack than ours, and probably better than most packaged protein snacks. It's cheaper per gram of protein too, and it brings calcium, which matters for bone health — see vegan protein and bone health.
Where our chips make sense is everywhere the fridge isn't: the office drawer, the gym bag, the car, the lunchbox, the plane, the hike. That's a logistical advantage rather than a nutritional one, and it's genuinely worth something — a snack you can't access delivers nothing.
And there's an obvious combination. Chips with a Greek yogurt dip — plain, thinned with lemon and herbs — is around 21 g of protein for 250 calories, better than either alone. Method in chips with raita.
The transferable point
The best snack is context-dependent, and the context that matters most is whether you can actually eat it when you're hungry.
Nutrition comparisons on paper assume both options are available. They usually aren't, and the shelf-stable one wins by default at 3pm in an office.
