Is Creatine a Steroid? Clearing Up the Category Error
They're different classes of molecule doing different things through different pathways. The confusion is entirely about context.

"Isn't creatine basically a steroid?" is a question people ask sincerely, and it's usually the reason a parent, a partner or a coach is uneasy about it.
The answer is no, and the reason is worth understanding rather than just asserting.
What an anabolic steroid actually is
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone. Structurally they're steroids — a four-ring carbon skeleton shared with cholesterol, cortisol and oestrogen.
They work as hormones: they bind to androgen receptors inside cells, and the receptor-hormone complex travels to the nucleus and alters gene transcription. That changes which proteins the cell builds, which is how they drive muscle growth well beyond natural limits.
Because they act on a signalling system the body regulates tightly, they also suppress endogenous testosterone production and carry cardiovascular, hepatic, psychiatric and reproductive risks.
What creatine is
Creatine is an amino acid derivative — a small nitrogen-containing compound your liver and kidneys synthesise from arginine, glycine and methionine at roughly a gram a day.
It has no steroid ring structure. It doesn't bind a hormone receptor. It doesn't alter gene transcription through an endocrine pathway.
Its role is metabolic and mechanical: stored in muscle as phosphocreatine, it donates a phosphate group to regenerate ATP during the first seconds of maximal effort. It's a substrate — a raw material — not a signal.
The closest everyday comparison is glycogen. Nobody calls stored carbohydrate a steroid, and creatine sits in the same category of thing.

Where the confusion comes from
Three sources, none of them chemical.
Shared shelf space. Creatine sits in the same shops, magazines and online spaces as substances that are genuinely performance-enhancing drugs. Association isn't evidence, but it's persuasive.
The word "anabolic." It simply means "building up" — the constructive side of metabolism. Protein synthesis is anabolic. Eating is anabolic. The word got welded to steroids in popular usage and now carries their connotations.
The visible water weight. People start creatine, gain 1–2 kg within weeks, and look slightly fuller. That reads as a dramatic change to an observer, when it's intracellular water. See creatine and water retention.
Regulatory status, concretely
Not banned in sport. Creatine does not appear on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list. It's legal in Olympic sport, professional leagues and collegiate athletics.
The one nuance: tested athletes need certified products, because contamination during manufacturing is a real risk in the supplement industry generally. That's an argument about supply chains, not about creatine. See banned substances and contamination.

The proportionate summary
Creatine is a compound your body makes and you already eat. It has an unusually strong safety record across trials running up to five years in healthy adults. Its effect is real and modest — a few extra reps, better repeated-sprint performance.
That's a different category of thing from a synthetic hormone, and conflating the two makes it harder to have a sensible conversation about either.
