Creatine vs Pre-Workout: Different Jobs Entirely
One is a chronic saturation supplement. The other is acute stimulation. Comparing them misses what each is for.

"Should I take creatine or a pre-workout?" is a common question and a slightly malformed one, because they operate on completely different timescales through completely different mechanisms.
It's a bit like asking whether to buy running shoes or a coffee.
How each works
Creatine is chronic. It works by saturating muscle stores over three to four weeks and maintaining them against daily turnover. There is no acute effect — you feel nothing when you take it. What you get is more capacity in short maximal efforts, available because of what you did over the preceding month.
Pre-workout is acute. It works in the 20 to 60 minutes after you take it, and it's gone within hours. The effect is largely perceptual — reduced perception of effort, increased alertness, sometimes a tingling sensation people interpret as the product working.
Chronic versus acute. Neither substitutes for the other.
What's actually in a pre-workout
The category is loosely defined, but most products combine some of:
Caffeine — the primary active in nearly every pre-workout, and the ingredient responsible for most of what you feel. Well evidenced for endurance, reduced perceived exertion and alertness. Typical doses run 150–400 mg, which is one to four cups of coffee.
Beta-alanine — responsible for the tingling (paraesthesia), which is harmless and unrelated to efficacy. Beta-alanine works chronically through muscle carnosine accumulation over weeks, so its presence in an acute pre-workout is somewhat beside the point. See creatine vs beta-alanine.
Citrulline malate — some evidence for blood flow and training volume, generally at doses around 6–8 g. Frequently underdosed in blends.
Creatine — sometimes included, usually at a fraction of an effective dose. A pre-workout with 1 g of creatine per serving, taken only on training days, will never saturate anything.
Assorted extras — tyrosine, taurine, nootropics, vitamins. Generally weak evidence, frequently underdosed.
The proprietary blend problem
Worth flagging because pre-workouts are the category where it's most common.
Many list a blend total without individual ingredient amounts — "Energy Matrix 6,200 mg." Since ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, you can infer the first dominates, but you can't tell whether the citrulline is at 6 g or 600 mg.

The tolerance asymmetry
An important practical difference.
Caffeine produces tolerance. Adenosine receptors adapt to repeated exposure, so the same dose produces less effect over time. Many people escalate, which is why pre-workout scoops get larger. Withdrawal — headache, fatigue, irritability — is real.
Creatine doesn't. It's a substrate, not a signalling molecule. There's no receptor to desensitise, and no tolerance. This is also why cycling creatine has no evidence behind it. See do you need to cycle creatine.
The sleep consequence matters too. Caffeine's half-life is roughly five hours, so a 5pm pre-workout is still meaningfully active at bedtime — and sleep is a larger determinant of training adaptation than any supplement. Creatine has no such cost.
If you had to pick one
Creatine, for most people.
It affects the physiological capacity to do work rather than the perception of it. It works on rest days. It doesn't degrade sleep, doesn't produce tolerance, and costs less. And the evidence for creatine specifically is stronger than for most pre-workout formulations as a whole.
The case for a pre-workout is narrower but real: if you train early, train tired, or need reduced perceived exertion for a hard session, caffeine works and works reliably.
Cheaper and more controllable version: plain caffeine, dosed deliberately. A coffee or a caffeine tablet gives you the main active of most pre-workouts without the blend, the cost or the guesswork.
Taking both
Entirely fine. No meaningful interaction — one 1996 study suggested caffeine might blunt creatine's benefit, and replication attempts have generally not reproduced it. See creatine and caffeine.
Two notes: don't rely on a pre-workout's creatine content to saturate you, and take creatine daily rather than only on training days.
