Creatine and Caffeine: Is There Really an Interaction?

A 1996 study found the combination cancelled creatine's benefit. Almost nothing since has reproduced it.

If you take creatine and drink coffee — which describes most people who take creatine — you've probably encountered the claim that caffeine blocks it.

Like several creatine myths, this one traces to a single study with a specific design, and the story since is more interesting than the headline.

The 1996 study

Work by Vandenberghe and colleagues in Belgium. Participants took creatine alone, or creatine with caffeine at roughly 5 mg per kilogram of bodyweight daily — a substantial dose, around 350 mg for a 70 kg person, or three to four strong coffees.

The finding: both groups showed increased muscle phosphocreatine. But the performance benefit — improved dynamic torque production — appeared in the creatine-only group and was absent in the creatine-plus-caffeine group.

Note the detail that gets lost: caffeine did not prevent creatine from loading into muscle. Phosphocreatine rose in both groups. Whatever happened, it wasn't blocked absorption.

The proposed mechanism

The most discussed explanation involves muscle relaxation time.

Creatine appears to shorten relaxation time between contractions, which helps in repeated rapid efforts. Some research suggests caffeine may prolong it, potentially through effects on calcium handling in muscle.

If so, the two would work against each other on that specific variable — without either failing to do its own job. That's a plausible mechanism, and it would explain a performance-level interference with no absorption-level interference.

Plausible is not established. The mechanism remains a hypothesis.

What happened next

Very little replication, which is the crux.

Subsequent studies examining creatine and caffeine together have generally not reproduced the interference effect. Several found co-ingestion performed as well as creatine alone, and some found combined benefits. A review by Trexler and Smith-Ryan examining the question concluded the evidence for a meaningful negative interaction is limited and inconsistent.

The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand on creatine does not identify caffeine co-ingestion as a concern.

There are also design considerations in the original work — a small sample, a specific performance measure, and a fairly high sustained caffeine dose. Findings that don't replicate across two decades of subsequent interest generally warrant caution.

What a fair reading looks like

Not "definitively debunked" — a single finding failing to replicate isn't the same as being disproven.

The honest position: one 1996 study found interference at a specific dose on a specific measure, replication attempts have generally not confirmed it, and no evidence suggests caffeine impairs creatine uptake into muscle.

The practical answer

For almost everyone, no adjustment is needed. Have your coffee. Take your creatine.

Two considerations if you want to be careful at the margins:

Separate them by a couple of hours if it's easy. Costs nothing, addresses the hypothetical, and there's no reason to take them together specifically. Creatine works through saturation, so timing is flexible — see creatine timing.

Note the dose in the original study was high. Around 5 mg/kg daily, sustained. If your intake is one or two coffees, you're well below what was tested.

The other caffeine myth worth clearing

Related concern: that caffeine's diuretic effect dehydrates you and undermines creatine's cell hydration.

Caffeine has a mild acute diuretic effect at higher doses in people not habituated to it. In regular consumers, tolerance to that effect develops, and research on habitual coffee drinkers generally finds moderate consumption doesn't produce meaningful dehydration or negative fluid balance.

What actually matters more

Worth keeping proportion. Variables that determine your creatine results, ranked:

  1. Taking it daily and consistently
  2. Taking enough for your bodyweight
  3. Training
  4. Whether the product contains what it claims — see how to check a creatine gummy
  5. Timing relative to anything, caffeine included

If you're separating creatine from coffee by two hours while missing doses twice a week, the optimisation isn't where the problem is.
