Eight weeks on, four weeks off. It's standard advice with no clear evidence behind it — here's where it came from.

Creatine cycling — some period on, then a deliberate break — is one of the most widely repeated pieces of supplement advice, and one of the least supported.

Worth examining, because the reasoning behind it turns out to be borrowed from a different class of substance entirely.

The three arguments for cycling

1. "Receptors downregulate." The claim is that continuous supplementation causes the creatine transporter to become less responsive, so you need breaks to restore sensitivity.

2. "Your body stops making its own." The claim is that supplementation suppresses endogenous synthesis and that suppression becomes permanent without breaks.

3. "Cycling prevents tolerance." Generalised from how the body adapts to stimulants and hormones.

Let's take them in order.

Transporter downregulation

There is genuine research here, mostly in animal and cell models, suggesting the creatine transporter (CreaT) can be downregulated in response to sustained high extracellular creatine.

What that would predict in practice is a plateau — muscle stores fill and stop rising. Which is exactly what happens, and it's not a problem. Saturation is the goal. Once the tank is full, reduced uptake activity simply means you're not absorbing creatine you have nowhere to put.

What downregulation would need to predict, to justify cycling, is that saturated muscle progressively loses creatine during continued supplementation. Long-term studies don't show that. People supplementing continuously for months to years maintain elevated stores.

Endogenous synthesis

This part is true, and it's the strongest of the three.

Your liver and kidneys synthesise roughly a gram of creatine daily from arginine, glycine and methionine. During supplementation, that endogenous production is downregulated — a normal feedback response, the same way most regulated systems respond to abundant external supply.

The question is whether it recovers. Available evidence indicates it does: endogenous synthesis returns to normal after supplementation stops, and no research has demonstrated permanent suppression of creatine synthesis in humans.

So there's a real physiological effect and no evidence of a lasting consequence.

Tolerance

This one is a category error. Tolerance is characteristic of substances acting on receptors that adapt to repeated stimulation — caffeine and adenosine receptors, opioids, nicotine.

Creatine isn't a signalling molecule. It's a substrate — a raw material the muscle stores and uses. Your muscles don't become tolerant to phosphocreatine any more than they become tolerant to glycogen. There's no receptor to desensitise.

The actual cost of cycling

Here's the part that matters, and it's why we'd advise against it.

Muscle creatine stores wash out over roughly four to six weeks after stopping. A four-week off period means you spend most of it losing saturation, and then need three to four weeks of consistent dosing to rebuild it once you resume.

Run that cycle repeatedly and you spend a substantial share of the year sub-saturated — which is to say, a substantial share of the year not getting the effect you're paying for.

What the long-term safety data says

The implicit worry underneath cycling is that continuous use must be harmful somehow.

Creatine has been studied continuously for extended periods, including trials running up to five years, with monitoring of kidney, liver and cardiovascular markers. The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand concludes there's no evidence of adverse effects from long-term supplementation in healthy individuals at recommended doses.

That's a stronger safety record than most things people take without a second thought. Fuller treatment in does creatine damage your kidneys.

When taking a break does make sense

Not for physiological reasons — for practical ones:

  • Weight-class competition. The 1–2 kg of intracellular water is a real consideration when you have to make a number. Coming off during a cut and resuming afterward is a legitimate strategy.
  • Endurance events with a power-to-weight constraint. Same logic.
  • An extended break from training. Creatine's performance benefits require a training stimulus. Off-season with no lifting, the case is weaker — though the cognitive and general-health research is a separate consideration.
  • Cost. Entirely reasonable. It's a modest-benefit supplement, not a necessity.

The recommendation

Take it continuously. Three gummies daily is 3 g of creatine monohydrate, which maintains saturation indefinitely without needing a break.

If you'd rather cycle, nothing bad will happen — you'll just spend part of each cycle without the effect.
