January: Starting Creatine With a New Training Block

A four-week saturation window fits a January block well. What to track, and what to ignore.

January is when most people start supplements and February is when most people stop. Creatine has a specific timeline that makes it particularly vulnerable to that pattern — and easy to get right if you know what to expect.

The timeline, honestly

Creatine is slow. On a 3 g maintenance dose:

TimeframeWhat's happening
Week 1Nothing perceptible
Weeks 1–4Stores filling; gradual water weight
Weeks 4–6Saturation; extra reps become available
Weeks 6–12Training volume converts into strength and size

Start on 1 January and the point at which you could reasonably assess it is around mid-February — which is past when most resolutions have quietly ended.

Knowing that in advance is most of the battle. See how long until creatine works.

The January trap

A specific and avoidable problem.

Many people start creatine in January and a calorie deficit in January. Creatine adds 1–2 kg of intracellular water over the first few weeks; a deficit removes fat over the same period.

They cancel on the scale.

So someone doing everything correctly watches the number not move for a month and concludes nothing is working. That's a well-timed way to abandon two things that were both succeeding.

Two fixes:

Stagger them. Start creatine four to six weeks before the deficit, let the water weight arrive and stabilise, then begin. Now the scale reflects fat loss.

Or track something else. Waist measurement, progress photos, reps at a fixed load, how clothes fit. All less noisy than daily weight during this specific window.

Detail in creatine in a cut and creatine and water retention.

What to actually track

Since the effect is a few extra reps rather than a sensation, you need a record or you won't see it.

Before you start, note reps at a fixed load on two or three main lifts. A working set at a weight you can repeat — not a max attempt.

After eight weeks, compare. Look for an extra rep or two at the same weight, or less drop-off across sets — set four looking more like set one.

That's the whole assessment method. It takes two minutes to set up and it's the difference between knowing and guessing.

What to ignore

How you feel. Creatine isn't a stimulant. There's no acute effect, and waiting to feel something means concluding it failed.

Daily scale weight in weeks one to four. Water weight is arriving, which is expected and not informative.

Week-two impressions. You aren't saturated yet.

Getting the habit to survive

The actual determinant, since creatine only works through consistency maintained over months.

Anchor it to an existing daily routine — after morning coffee, after brushing your teeth. Not "after training," which fails on rest days, and rest days are when people forget. Turnover doesn't pause because you didn't train.

Put the pouch where the anchor happens. Proximity beats intention.

Set a reorder reminder. A 200 g pouch is 22 servings — about three weeks. Running out in early February is a common way the chain breaks.

What creatine won't fix

Worth stating in a month that attracts a lot of overclaiming.

  • It isn't a fat loss supplement. No mechanism, no evidence.
  • It won't work without training. Every study demonstrating a benefit involved a training programme.
  • It doesn't work for everyone. Roughly 20–30% of people show minimal response, usually because baseline stores were already near capacity. See non-responders.
  • It won't compensate for inadequate protein, sleep or programming. Those determine far more than creatine does.

A note on January generally

January carries heavy cultural pressure around restriction and body change, and that pressure lands hardest on people for whom it's already difficult.

If food, exercise or bodyweight is occupying a large share of your attention, or if a training plan feels like punishment, that's worth raising with a doctor or registered dietitian rather than optimising further.

A supplement is a small thing. The training, the sleep and the eating are the substance.
