Creatine Non-Responders: Why It Doesn't Work for Everyone

Creatine is unusually well supported, which makes it disorienting when it does nothing for you. The most common conclusion — that you did it wrong — is often not the explanation.

Non-response is a documented phenomenon with an identifiable mechanism.

How common

Figures vary by study and by how response is defined, but a commonly cited range is that roughly 20–30% of people show minimal increase in muscle creatine content following supplementation.

"Minimal increase" is the key phrase. Non-responders aren't failing to absorb creatine — they're failing to increase muscle stores, which is what produces the effect.

The main reason: you started full

Muscle has a ceiling for creatine storage — roughly 150–160 mmol per kilogram of dry muscle. Supplementation raises stores toward that ceiling; it can't push past it.

Which means your response size is determined largely by how far below the ceiling you started.

Someone at 100 mmol/kg has 50 units of headroom and will see a substantial increase. Someone already at 145 mmol/kg has almost none, and will see very little — not because anything went wrong, but because there was nowhere to go.

What puts you near the ceiling naturally:

  • High dietary creatine intake. Regular red meat and fish — roughly 1–2 g per pound of red meat.
  • A higher proportion of type II muscle fibres. Fast-twitch fibres store more creatine than slow-twitch.
  • Greater muscle mass and training history.
  • Individual variation in creatine transporter expression.

The inverse also holds, which is why the largest responses tend to appear in people with the lowest baselines — most notably vegetarians and vegans, who get essentially no dietary creatine. See creatine for vegans and vegetarians.

Before concluding you're a non-responder

Five things that produce the appearance of non-response and aren't:

1. Not enough time. At 3 g daily, saturation takes around four weeks — longer than most people wait before judging. A loading protocol answers in a week, but isn't practical in gummy form. See how long until creatine works.

2. Inconsistent dosing. Missing two or three days a week means you may never reach saturation. Consistency isn't a refinement here, it's the mechanism.

3. Too small a dose for your size. Three grams sits at the bottom of the 3–5 g range. A 100 kg person has a larger pool and higher daily turnover, and may genuinely need more. See creatine dose by bodyweight.

4. The product didn't contain what it claimed. Genuinely relevant in the gummy category, where creatine degrades to inert creatinine in the presence of water, acid and heat. 5. Expecting the wrong thing. Creatine isn't a stimulant. There's no acute sensation. The effect is a few extra reps and better repeated-sprint performance — visible in a training log, not in how you feel.

How to actually tell

Measuring muscle creatine content requires a biopsy, so that's out. Practical proxies:

Weight. Most responders gain roughly 1–2 kg of intracellular water within the first few weeks. Little or no weight change after four to six weeks of consistent dosing is suggestive. Imperfect — you can respond in muscle stores with modest water gain. See creatine and water retention.

Training log. The better indicator. Track reps at a fixed load, or performance on repeated sprints, for four weeks before and after starting. Look for an extra rep or two at the same weight, or less drop-off across sets.

Give it eight weeks of consistent dosing before deciding. This is a slow supplement and premature conclusions are the norm.

If you are one

Then creatine isn't for you, and that's a legitimate outcome rather than a failure.

Non-response usually means your muscle creatine stores were already near capacity — which is arguably a good position to be in. You're not missing anything; you already had it.

Worth knowing: the performance data is the most established part of the creatine literature, but not all of it. Research on cognition, recovery and bone in older adults operates through partly different mechanisms, and a muscle non-responder isn't necessarily a non-responder everywhere. That said, those areas are less settled and we wouldn't build a purchase on them.
