A small research thread on glucose uptake, and a more immediate point about what's sweetening the gummy.

There are two quite separate blood sugar topics here, and conflating them would be a mistake.

One is a preliminary research area about creatine and glucose metabolism. The other is the practical fact that our gummies contain 9 g of sugar alcohols per serving, which is not glycemically neutral.

The second is more relevant to you than the first.

The research thread

Muscle takes up glucose from the bloodstream largely via the GLUT4 transporter, which moves to the cell surface in response to insulin and to muscle contraction.

Some research has examined whether creatine influences GLUT4 translocation, with the hypothesis that improved glucose uptake could have metabolic relevance.

Work by Gualano and colleagues examined creatine supplementation combined with exercise training in people with type 2 diabetes, reporting improvements in glycemic control measures compared with exercise plus placebo, alongside findings on GLUT4 translocation.

Related work has looked at creatine and glycogen storage, which shares a mechanistic thread — glucose uptake into muscle.

Why this isn't actionable

Four reasons to file it as interesting rather than useful.

Small studies. This is a handful of trials, not a body of evidence.

Exercise is doing most of the work. The positive findings come from creatine plus exercise training. Exercise on its own has strong, well-established effects on glycemic control. Isolating creatine's contribution from a much larger effect is difficult.

It hasn't replicated at scale. Promising early findings in metabolic research frequently don't survive larger trials.

It isn't a permitted claim. Health Canada's creatine monograph doesn't cover blood sugar or metabolic claims, and we don't make them. See what Health Canada lets a creatine product claim.

If you have diabetes, this research is not a reason to take creatine, and nothing here should influence your management. That's a conversation with your care team.

The more immediate point: maltitol

This is what actually matters if you're monitoring blood glucose.

Our gummies are sweetened primarily with maltitol, a sugar alcohol. Three gummies contain 9 g of sugar alcohols within 11 g of total carbohydrate.

The panel declares Sugars 0 g, which is accurate — sugar alcohols are not classified as sugars for labelling purposes.

But maltitol is not glycemically inert. It's partially digested to glucose and sorbitol in the small intestine, and the glucose portion enters circulation. Its glycemic index is commonly cited somewhere in the range of 35 to 52 — lower than sucrose at around 65, and meaningfully above zero.

Compare erythritol, which has a glycemic index near zero because it's absorbed and excreted largely unchanged.

Practical implication: don't treat "0 g sugars" as meaning no glycemic effect. Count the 11 g of total carbohydrate if you track, and confirm your counting method with your diabetes care team rather than a front-of-pack claim.

The net position for someone managing glucose

Two things are true at once:

There's preliminary research suggesting creatine plus exercise may have favourable metabolic effects. It's early, small, and not a basis for any decision.

The product delivering that creatine carries 11 g of carbohydrate and 9 g of a partially glycemic sugar alcohol per serving. That's concrete and countable.

If glucose management is a priority, creatine monohydrate powder has no carbohydrate at all. It's cheaper, more stable, and glycemically neutral. That's the straightforward answer, and we'd rather give it than pretend a gummy is the better choice for that use case.

The other blood marker worth mentioning

Separate from glucose, but relevant to anyone having regular blood work — which describes most people managing diabetes.

Creatine supplementation raises serum creatinine, the marker used to estimate kidney function, without impairing kidney function. Since kidney monitoring is routine in diabetes care, this is worth flagging to your clinician before testing.
