Should Teenagers Take Creatine?

Health Canada's monograph is written for adults. Here's what that means and what the sports bodies say.

This question comes from two directions: teenage athletes who've heard about creatine, and parents who've found a tub in a gym bag.

The honest answer involves more uncertainty than either group usually wants, so let's separate what's known from what's assumed.

The regulatory position in Canada

Creatine products in Canada are regulated as Natural Health Products and require a Natural Product Number, granted against a Health Canada monograph specifying permitted doses, duration and populations.

The creatine monograph is written for adults. Product labels reflect that, and our product is intended for adults.

That's not a finding of harm in adolescents. It reflects that the evidence base supporting the monograph is in adults, and regulators don't extend recommendations to populations that weren't studied.

What the sports and medical bodies say

Positions vary, which is itself informative.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has generally discouraged performance-enhancing substance use including creatine in adolescents, emphasising that young athletes should focus on training, nutrition and recovery.

The International Society of Sports Nutrition takes a somewhat different view, noting in its position stand that there's no compelling evidence creatine is unsafe in younger populations, and that it may be appropriate for adolescent athletes under specific conditions — including that they're past puberty, involved in serious competitive training, eating a well-balanced diet, and being supervised by knowledgeable adults with parental awareness.

Those aren't contradictory so much as differently weighted. One prioritises caution in the absence of data; the other notes the absence of evidence of harm.

What's actually known

There's no evidence of harm specific to adolescents. Creatine is a compound the body makes and dietary meat provides, and no research has demonstrated adverse effects unique to younger users.

There's also very little research in this group. Most creatine safety data comes from adults. The paediatric literature that exists is largely clinical — creatine in specific medical conditions — rather than performance supplementation in healthy adolescents.

"No evidence of harm" and "evidence of safety" are different statements, and in a growing body the distinction matters more than it would in an adult.

The more useful conversation

For a teenage athlete, creatine sits near the bottom of a list of things that would improve performance. Ahead of it:

  • Total energy intake. Under-eating relative to training demands is common in adolescent athletes and genuinely harmful in a growing body — affecting bone accrual, hormonal development and growth. Warning signs include recurrent stress injuries, frequent illness, delayed or absent periods, and performance declining despite consistent training.
  • Sleep. Adolescent sleep timing shifts later during puberty, colliding with early school starts. Chronic sleep debt costs more performance than any supplement adds.
  • Consistent, well-programmed training with attention to technique and progression.
  • Adequate protein spread across the day — most adolescents get enough total but concentrate it at dinner.
  • Iron status, particularly in menstruating athletes. Worth testing.

A teenager doing all of that well and considering creatine is in a very different position from one using it as a shortcut past any of it.

For parents

Three things worth knowing if you've found creatine in a gym bag.

It isn't a steroid. Different class of molecule, different mechanism, not banned in sport, no prescription required. See is creatine a steroid.

The concerning thing usually isn't the creatine. It's whether a young person is under pressure about their body or performance, whether they're eating enough, and what else they might be considering. A conversation about that is more valuable than one about a supplement.

If a teenage athlete and their family are considering creatine, that's a conversation for a physician or a registered dietitian who knows the individual — ideally one working in sports medicine. That's a more useful answer than anything a manufacturer can offer, and we'd rather point you there than sell you something.
