Cycling makes the creatine decision unusually concrete, because the sport has a metric that captures the trade-off directly: power-to-weight ratio.

Creatine adds power in specific efforts and adds weight in all of them. Whether that's a good deal depends entirely on your discipline.

The arithmetic

Creatine produces roughly 1–2 kg of intracellular water. For a 70 kg rider, call it 1.5 kg — around 2% of bodyweight.

On a sustained climb, power-to-weight largely determines speed. A 2% weight increase requires roughly a 2% power increase to climb at the same rate.

Creatine does not increase sustained aerobic power by 2%. It contributes almost nothing to a 20-minute threshold effort, which is aerobic. So on climbs, the trade is straightforwardly negative.

Where it's positive

Anaerobic efforts, and cycling has more of them than the climbing framing suggests.

Track sprinting. Match sprints, keirin, standing starts. Efforts of a few seconds to under a minute, overwhelmingly anaerobic. This is creatine's home ground, and added mass is largely irrelevant on a velodrome.

Bunch sprints. A 200–400 metre effort at the end of a road race. Phosphocreatine window.

Criteriums. Repeated accelerations out of corners for an hour, with incomplete recovery between. Almost the definition of repeated-sprint work.

Cyclocross and mountain biking. Repeated surges, technical accelerations, remounts. Same pattern.

BMX. Explosive start, short race. Ideal fit.

The off-season case

Worth its own note, because it applies even to climbers.

Most serious cyclists now do resistance training in the off-season for maximal force production, injury resilience and bone density — the last being genuinely important, since cycling is non-weight-bearing and cyclists show elevated rates of low bone density.

A note on bone

Cycling's non-weight-bearing nature is a real issue — low bone mineral density is more common in competitive cyclists than in the general population, and it interacts badly with crash risk.

The intervention with evidence is resistance training and impact work, not a supplement. Some trials combining creatine with resistance training have reported bone benefits, mostly in older adults, and creatine without training doesn't appear to affect bone. Treat it as a possible small addition to a strength programme rather than a reason to take it.

The fuelling point that matters more

Cycling has a well-documented problem with low energy availability — chronically consuming less energy than training demands. It affects bone density, hormonal function, immunity and performance, in both men and women, and the sport's culture around weight makes it more common than it should be.

Warning signs: recurrent stress injuries, frequent illness, disrupted or absent menstrual cycles, unusual fatigue, and power declining despite consistent training. Any of those is a conversation with a doctor or sports dietitian rather than a supplement question.

Carbohydrate availability and total intake determine cycling performance far more than creatine does.
