Running Fuel: What to Eat Before and After a 5K
For a 5K you don't need a nutrition PhD — just a few simple rules.

You don't need a complicated fueling plan for a 5K. You need a settled stomach going in and a smart refuel coming out. Here's the short version.
Before: light and familiar
For a run under an hour, a big meal isn't necessary and can backfire. If you're running in the morning, a small carb-focused snack 30–60 minutes prior — or even just proper hydration — is often enough. The golden rule: nothing new on race day. Practice your pre-run routine in training.
During: usually nothing
For a 5K, most runners don't need mid-run fuel; your stored energy covers the distance. Water is typically all you'll want. Mid-run gels and drinks matter more for longer efforts.
After: protein + carbs
This is where a 5K refuel counts. Pair carbohydrates to top up energy with protein to support recovery. A CheatDay Smoothie covers both in one easy bottle, or grab a FlexBev to rehydrate and get creatine and BCAAs in.
Hydration bookends everything
Be hydrated before you start and top up after. Get the bookends right and a 5K takes care of itself.
