Building Muscle on a Plant-Based Diet

Plants build muscle. You just have to be a little more deliberate.

The idea that you can't build muscle without meat is outdated — plenty of strong, muscular athletes are plant-based. It just takes a bit more intention. Here's what actually matters.

1. Hit your total protein

Muscle is built on adequate protein and progressive training, regardless of the source. Active people aiming to build muscle generally target the higher end of protein intake. On a plant-based diet the number is the same; you just reach it from plants.

2. Vary your protein sources

Because some individual plant proteins are lower in one or two amino acids, variety is your friend. Rotate legumes, soy foods, grains, nuts, seeds — and lean on complete blends. A pea + oat blend, like in our Smoothies, covers the profile in one shot.

3. Eat enough total food

Muscle growth needs energy. Plant diets can be filling and high in fiber, which is great for health but can make it easy to under-eat calories. If you're not growing, you may simply need more total food — calorie-dense choices and liquid calories like smoothies help.

The training still matters most

No diet substitutes for progressive, consistent resistance training. Nutrition supports the work; it doesn't replace it. Get the protein, the variety, the calories and the training, and plants build plenty of muscle.
